The goal of this lesson is for children to be able to identify the phoneme /s/ while reading.

Materials

  • Primary paper and pencil

  • Poster paper with the tongue tickler “The silly snake slithers slowly”

  • Word cards SAIL, SICK, SAY, SIT

  • Assessment Sheet, work sheet

  • Book- Scaredy Squirrel by Melania Watt

  1. Say: Our written language is like a secret code. It can be tricky to know what each letter stands for. The mouth moves in a certain way to create words. Today we are going to see how our mouth moves to make the /s/ sound.  When we spell /s/ it is with the letter S. the letter S looks a lot like a sithering snake. Snakes make the “sss” sound.

  2. We are going to practice how to make the /s/ sound. Notice where your tongue, lips and teeth are, /s/. Notice your lips are apart and your teeth are together. Put your hands to gether and slither them like a snake while saying /s/, /s/, /s/.

  3. I am going to show you how to find /s/ in the word say. I am going to say the word very slowly. I want you to listen for the slithering snake sound ssssss. Sssssss-aaaa-yyyy. I felt my teeth come together, my lips part, and air through my teeth. I could feel the /s/ in say

  4. Now we are going to try a tongue tickler! The tongue tickler is on this poster. I will say it once and then lets say it together. “The silly snake slithers slowly”. “The Silly snake slithers slowly”. Now lets break it down and stretch out the /s/ sound it each word. “the ssssssilly ssssssnake sssssslithers ssssslowly”. Now lets break of the /s/ sound in each word “the /s/illy /s/nake /s/lithers /s/lowly

  5. Now I am going to say 2 words and I want you to tell me which word you hear /s/ in. do you hear /s/ in splat or pat? Slim or grim? Sat or cat? Now we are going to play a game. Put your hands together like a slithering snake. I am going to say a few words and if you hear the /s/ sound then I want you to slither your hands like a snake. But if you do not hear the /s/ sound then I want you to place your hands in your lap. Saw,play, sing, hop, swamp, pond, sister

  6. [hand out primary paper and pencil to student or students] we use the letter S to spell /s/. the letter S looks like a slithering snake. We are going to practice how to write the capital letter S. Put your hands together to make a snake. The snake is going to make its way around 2 large rocks. Start the snake at the bottom of the rock then curve up to the left, then curve down to the right all the way around the second rock. Now watch me slither around the rocks on my paper (or whiteboard) try this with your pencil and paper. I will walk around to see if anyone needs help.

  7. Now we are going to read the /s/ sound in a book. Scaredy Squirrel. Book Talk- Scaredy Squirrel is very nervous and likes to stay in his tree all day. But one day he leaves his safe tree and discovers the world. Will scaredy the squirrel like the outside world? You are going to have to read the rest to find out.

  8. Show SAIL have students decide if it is sail or tail.  SICK or nick, SAY or play, SIT or mat.

  9. To assess the students on the sound /s/ and the letter S I will give them this work sheet. The student will color each picture and have to complete the word by writing S  in the beginning of the word. I will walk around to see if anyone needs any help. Then call individual students to read the words on the word cards from number 8.
